Bull Terrier Dog

The Bull Terrier Dog appeared in the 19th century as a cross between the Bulldog and several Terriers. Later, the blood of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and some other breeds was added to the Bull Terrier. The best attributes of the new breed were a low pain threshold and massive jaws. Though created for pit fighting, these dogs didn’t do well in the pit. The cruel sport was banned right after the Bull Terrier was developed.

The Bull Terrier Dog found popularity as a family pet, guard, watchdog, ratter, and hunting dog. This breed is very versatile and able to perform a variety of tasks. In spite of their formidable appearance, Bull Terriers are very friendly and gentle with the family, but alert with the strangers. Though very protective, they are good mannered with visitors and easily distinguish between a friend and a foe. These dogs can be trusted with children and brighten up the lives of the elderly. Most Bull Terriers are sweet and dependable; some of them perform a role of a family clown.

A Bull Terrier Dog is very energetic. It enjoys outdoor games and especially tasks that involve mental stimulation. Bull Terriers make good companions for hiking and jogging. It’s quite possible to keep a pet of this breed in an apartment. Bull Terriers are well-behaved indoors, if provided with daily walks and play. Pets of this breed should not be left alone for a long time. They thrive on attention and become frustrated and depressed if there is no one around. A short coat of the Bull Terrier cannot protect from cold, so these dogs should not be kept in areas where winters are very cold.

Healthy Bull Terriers live up to 12 years. There are several health concerns that a perspective Bull Terrier owner should keep in mind. Bull Terrier puppies have weak joints and should not be over exercised. Adult dogs are prone to bloat and obesity. Some Bull Terriers are prone to zinc deficiency that may lead to death. Deafness is a hereditary condition that occurs in some bloodlines. Male Bull Terriers can be too territorial. A neutered or spayed Bull Terrier Dog is much quieter and more reliable.
