American Bull Terrier

The American Bull Terrier developed a century ago for bull baiting and pit fighting still suffers from a reputation of a fierce and aggressive dog, though it was never successful in bloody sports and they were banned right after the Bull Terrier appeared. These dogs have always been popular as family pets, guards, ratters, hunters and herders. In the 1970s, a hysteria with all formerly fighting dogs began in America because the demand for fierce-looking dogs increased drastically. Many people wanted to own fighting dogs for protection or just as a matter of prestige. It resulted in a large number of backyard breeders who encouraged aggression in their puppies and sold potentially dangerous dogs to the wrong owners.

The American Bull Terrier and some other breeds (American Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers) are victims of irresponsible ownership and bad press, which takes a unique incident with a poorly bred and poorly trained dog and claims that all dogs of these breeds are aggressive and vicious by nature. In some cities, owning dogs of formerly fighting breeds is banned.

Though the American Bull Terrier retains some features useful in a fighting dog (such as a low pain threshold, muscular body, and powerful jaws) it’s generally very quiet and gentle. A well-bred and properly trained dog of this breed is even-tempered, obedient, and friendly not only with the family, but also with strangers. Bull Terriers are often used as service dogs for the disabled and playmates for children.

Early socialization and obedience training are absolutely necessary for all Bull Terriers. Since the American Bull Terrier is very intelligent and independent, it should be shown from the early age that humans are in charge. These dogs need a strong hand and should not be owned by mild and inexperienced people. Though present-day breeders don’t encourage aggression in their dogs, it’s not an easy matter to choose the right breeder and the right dog. High quality Bull Terriers should be sold with necessary registration papers, health guarantee, and a pedigree. In good kennels, all puppies are given basic socialization. Prior to purchasing an American Bull Terrier, make sure this breed is not banned in your area.
